And if you’re not quite sure where to go yet, here are a few suggestions and some more tips on cycling in the Salzburg region.

Short after-work rides: The best spots right in Puch

Fancy a short, relaxed ride after a long day to enjoy the tailwind? You can reach these wonderful spots right in Puch in just a few minutes – perfect for a leisurely ride after work:

  • Ursteinsteg: Cycle past the modern Salzburg University of Applied Sciences and the old dairy down to the Salzach and enjoy the view of the glistening river and the sweeping mountain panorama of the Salzach Valley.
  • Leisure area: Perfect for a quick break in the countryside, right behind FC Puch’s Waldstadion. Enjoy the peace and quiet on the jetty with the water right beneath your feet, on the comfortable loungers or simply on the sunbathing lawn gazing up at the blue sky.
  • Carrera WORLD: A stop-off for indoor racing fun for the whole family. Simply follow the signs between Ursteinsteg and the hydroelectric power station and discover the WORLD with free entry. Tickets for the race tracks are available on site, subject to availability, or in advance online.
  • Picturesque pond in St. Jakob am Thurn: A truly energising spot to take a deep breath, with a magnificent view of the historic castle tower and the pilgrimage church of St. James the Greater. An absolute must-visit for a souvenir photo!
  • Wiestal Reservoir: Our longest route takes you into the shady Hinterwiestal valley. At the end, you’ll find the perfect spot to recharge your batteries and, on hot days, take a refreshing dip in the lake.

Three varied tour suggestions for your day out

Fancy cycling beyond the town limits? Whether you’re a leisure cyclist or a keen miler – you shouldn’t miss these three tours during your stay in Puch:

1. The Tauern Cycle Route (Stage 5): A leisurely ride along the Salzach

Running right alongside the river, the Tauernradweg  offers a particularly refreshing ride with no major climbs and is ideal for the whole family.

TIP: Switch sides in Puch and enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of the Salzburg mountains from our Ursteinsteg footbridge!

Northwards to the city of Mozart: In around 30 minutes (approx. 9.5 km), you can cycle at a leisurely pace northwards to the world-famous old town of Salzburg. Along the way, you can enjoy views of Hohensalzburg Fortress and the river landscape. For a quick dip along the way, the Waldbad Anif is situated right on the outskirts of Pucher.

Southwards to the Celtic town and on into the Tennengau Salzach Valley: Heading south, after just around 20 minutes (approx. 6 km) you’ll reach the historic old town of Hallein, which is the perfect place to enjoy an ice cream whilst strolling through the town or visiting the Hallein outdoor swimming pool. If you fancy cycling a bit further, simply follow the Tauern Cycle Route further upstream to Kuchl (about 45 minutes from Puch). Here, the crystal-clear BĂŒrgerausee lake and the chance to ‘make your own cheese’ at the FĂŒrstenhof await. A little further south lies Golling (approx. 60 minutes from Puch): perfect destinations to round off a day trip here include the roaring natural spectacle of the Golling Waterfall, the Bluntau Valley or the historic Golling Castle.

2. The Nature.Adventure.Tour:

This leisurely 21-kilometre circuit starts right at Pucher railway station and takes you on a cycle ride through rolling hills and stunning contrasts. The great thing about this Nature.Adventure.Tour is that you can tackle the short, steep climb up to the idyllic pond at St. Jakob with your e-bike with absolutely no effort. Afterwards, the route continues at a leisurely pace into the shady Wiestal valley and through the famous marble village of Adnet. My personal tip for this route: combine your trip on a Wednesday or Friday afternoon with a visit to the farmers’ market at the Winklhof in Oberalm and pick up a few regional delicacies to take home!

 3. Following in the footsteps of history: The Salt and Lakes Tour

If you’re looking for an extended day trip or some beautiful stretches in the Tennengau, you’ll love this historic route, the Salt and Lakes Tour. Here, you’ll be following in the footsteps of the ‘white gold’, and Puch is the perfect starting point for this approximately 52-kilometre loop. What makes it special is the variety along the route: you’ll cycle past historic sites, impressive natural landmarks such as the Roman bridge over the Tauglbach, and straight to culinary hotspots like the village cheese dairies or traditional inns. For the more active, it’s even worth taking a detour to Bad DĂŒrrnberg and the Hallein Salt Worlds.

The perfect stop-off: Puch’s culinary variety

What would a successful day’s cycling be without the right refreshments? Anyone who pedals hard deserves a reward afterwards! In Puch, Urstein and St. Jakob am Thurn, a culinary range awaits you that leaves nothing to be desired. Our dedicated restaurants and cafĂ©s look forward to your visit and offer exactly what a cyclist’s heart desires after a ride: sitting back and relaxing in the sun, recharging your batteries in the cosy outdoor dining areas and on the inviting terraces. If you’d rather keep things flexible and spend your break right by the lake or on the banks of the Salzach, simply make use of the handy takeaway options to pop into your saddlebag. From traditional, hearty Austrian pub fare and international dishes to light snacks and exquisite sweet treats, everything is on offer here.

My personal verdict: Enthusiasm all round

I’ve, of course, tested the e-bikes and routes through Puch myself for you. I certainly wouldn’t describe myself as a cycling pro – and that’s exactly why I’m so thoroughly impressed! These modern e-bikes take the fear out of any distance or steep climb. In particular, the climbs up to St. Jakob am Thurn – which you might otherwise shy away from without a motor – feel like a walk in the park – though one that commands respect. It’s simply incredible fun to experience the countryside actively, yet completely carefree without a car, and to enjoy the breeze as you ride. You really must give it a go!
